It’s a Steampunk night out
Saturday, February 7th, 2009 by CarbonCopyJulie and I saw Abney Park at Club Heaven last night. It was a very fun show, and the first concert of any kind we had been to since before Basia was born.
WHAT!!! You’ve never heard of Abney Park?!?! You FOOLS!!!
“Abney Park comes from an era that never was, but one that we wish had been. An era where airships waged war in the skies, and corsets and cummerbunds were proper adventuring attire.
They’ve picked up their bad musical habits, scoundrelous musicians, and anachronistically hybridized instruments from dozens of locations and eras that they have visited in their travels and thrown them into one riotous dervish of a performance. Expect clockwork guitars, belly dancers, flintlock bassists, middle-eastern percussion, violent violin, and Tesla powered keyboards blazing in a post- apocalyptic, swashbuckling, Steampunk musical mayhem.
Society for creative rock anachronism??”
It was billed as more of an event (Steampunk Party II) featuring Abney Park vs. a full-on solo concert. There were a few vendors hawking everything from Victorian inspired fashions to goggles and other themed wares.
The show was quite good. All the members are very capable performers, if just a touch unpolished. But I consider that a very good thing! It shows they they actually play the instruments and rely on each others’ performances for tempo, timing and queues.
The songwriting is consistently good. Kristina, one of the two principle songwriters besides Captain Robert, debued a new song she had written. I forget what they said it was called, but it was very good. A touch moody & melancolic, but very moving. That was a once in a lifetime moment. Moving to an brand new amazing song with my love in my arms.
Here’s a couple samples of what they are like live…
