Work Schedules
Thursday, January 9th, 2003 by CarbonCopyI do not understand the typical “work day” schedule that most places of business impose on their employees. It is unrealistic and restrictive in my opinion, especially in modern urban environments where people rely on public transit.
Public transit is NEVER on time. It is consistently early or late. If you need to travel any kind of extended distance, you need to transfer to another public transit vehicle. If you drive a car, a commute can be even more difficult and extremely stressful.
My daily commute is extremely stressful. I get up at 6:30AM, shower, dress and truck out the door. If I’m lucky (and if the busses are traveling at anything remotely resembling the schedule), I’ll catch an early bus to my transfer point in Down Town Seattle in time to catch one of three early busses at 7:33AM. According to the posted schedules, I should be hitting that early bus 100% of the time. That early bus, according to the schedule and walk time once I arrive on the east side, should allow me to arrive at work at 8:05AM.
Even worse is when I miss any of the three busses that will get me to work before 8:30AM. I then have to wait up to a half hour before the next bus will get me to work. That bus also arrives at the stop a full fifteen (15) minutes LATE from the posted departure time.
Eight oh five AM is my target arrival time for work. This has not happened once since I started trying to hit that target. Earlier busses force me to arrive OVER a half hour early. This is a waste of time, as people will complain that I am arriving and leaving too early.
Next week I get up even earlier, as the transit schedules are obviously flawed. It’s a mess. I will need to board a buss near my home by no later that 6:20AM if I am to arrive at work by a time even close to 8:00AM. That means every day I will need to waste at least 30 minutes standing at a buss stop down town.
An hour and a half to get to work, with over one third of that time spent standing still on pavement. Can I bill the transit system for this?
